Paper POH - or not?
Just wondering how many out there have ditched their paper POH for electronic only. I currently fly with an electronic POH on my 796, my iPhone, and iPad - all of which I never fly without. Seems like overkill to even carry the paper anymore.
Just sayin' ... -

I didn't realize we could upload that to the 796?
I do find it annoying that Icon won't send a version that is easily printable by the page to just print and substitute the few pages that need swapping out, as if they are trying to force people to pay for an overpriced new printed version every time. It baffles me. The only time in the past I had a plane that had a bunch of POH updates over time they always printed and mailed the replacement pages and a list of exactly which pages to replace/add, rather than suggesting someone buy a whole new printed POH every time a page changed. -

Seems you wanted to make a point there by repeating it twice? I did check. He didn't like the idea at first but when I told him I had used iPad for manuals exclusively at AA for years his response was "I'm sure you got pretty fast at looking things up then - I don't see a problem as long as there's at least two electronic versions on board."

I should specify that the ASN, N number, and W&B information ARE on my PDF versions of the POH. THAT information is required in the POH - whether paper or digital. I have a copy on 796, iPad, and phone.
As far as putting it on the Garmin 796: attach the 796 via US cable to a laptop computer and you'll see the 796 show up as a hard drive. Navigate to the documents folder and simply drop a PDF version of your POH into the folder. -

01-15-2025, 03:14 PM #7The FAA Reference to this is AC 91-78, which allows you to do this in case anyone asks. So yes, it is legal if it is an exact copy of your paper, with all the updates as required. It is worth a quick read.

Nope. I don't know how to use this system and somehow it went out twice. Kind funny you'd get bent out of shape over that.Havea great rest of your day.

Bent outta shape? Nooooo. But you didn't simply send the same message twice. You wrote a message, sent it, wrote a different message, and sent it. In the military we would call that a "foot stomper" - saying the same thing twice. SOOO - I thought you were trying to make a point that what you were saying was important. Sorry if I touched a nerve by phrasing it the way I did.

Two? That is interesting for him to say, but I believe completely inaccurate, because the advisory circular (thanks for posting that below, Eric) twice says that it "suggests" a backup and that the backup can be either electronic or traditional/paper, but there is definitely not language saying it is a requirement to have a secondary/backup copy.

I would think the fed was referring to the following from the reg- which seems to indicate that, for instance, if you are using the Garmin 796 for primary navigation that you must have a SEPARATE POH on paper OR on another device.
"The secondary or backup information may be either traditional paper-based material or displayedelectronically by other means. Class 1 and Class 2 EFB can be used during all phases of flight
operations in lieu of paper reference material when the information displayed meets the
following criteria:
a.The EFB system does not replace any system or equipment (e.g. navigation,
communication, or surveillance system) that is required by 14 CFR part 91." -

The last line I quoted states that the EFB (POH in our case) can't replace any other system required - so I personally read that as IF your Garmin 796 is your ONLY navigation equipment then your POH must either be in paper or on another electronic device. You can't fly with your 796 being your only navigation device AND your only POH reference device at the same time. Most of us (I think) fly with an iPad as a backup - so that serves the purpose.

Perhaps I'm wrong in this but I didn't read using the POH on the 796 as in any way "replacing" a required system. Firstly, I don't think the 796 is a required system to begin with, you are VFR by definition, anything that I can think of that you can get from the 796 is supplemental to what you actually need and what is required, because when VFR your required navigation equipment is your validly medically certificated eyes (plus a chart, yes, but not a moving map!). You can (and some have) fly this plane perfectly well if you forget the 796 screen at home. Secondly, my interpretation of the word "replacing" was "taking something out and putting something else in". You haven't replaced anything, you just used it more than one way, which is what it was designed for. There are many screens on that device, and it seems as though referring to a page from something on the EFB side doesn't to me do anything to replace any required device, any more than going to the FPL screen to program something does vs. the maps page. What am I missing?

Directly from the FAA web site concerning VFR flight: “ Although the regulation does not specifically require it, you should always carry a current chart with you in flight”
You don’t have to carry liability insurance for your plane (if you own it) either.
