Altimeter Needed
Does anyone have a spare altimeter they’re willing to sell? My Kollsman window went dark. Altimeter and thousands window are fine, but can’t set baro pressure.
All spares are trapped in Tijuana until who knows when.
This is the third altimeter failure I’ve had. Always this exact same problem. I guess if I go up to that “special” altitude it’ll just read BAD. That sums it up. -

Unless there’s an updated version of this altimeter, it seems like it will only be a matter of time when the next one will fail too. In the meantime, I’d be setting the altitude before taking off.

Yup. I’m still planning to get a backup and put it on the shelf once (if?) they’re available from ICON. Just looking to see if there’s a quicker option.
My flying right now is daytime local, hopping around the lakes and ocean, so I’m setting altitude before takeoff and using the GPS altimeter as well. -

Tony, I've got the same issue as you. My kollsman window works - but you just can't see it unless it is dark in the cockpit. BUT - IF you have ADS-B in and are using Foreflight be aware that it has the ability to show baro-altitude based on the nearest altimeter setting. I just update the indicated altitude on the built-in altimeter based on the Foreflight readout occasionally.
This doesn't help those who have a sticking needle - but for an unreadable window it's a cheep, reliable alternative. -

Great tip, Michael!!
I knew about the baro alt in FF, but hadn’t thought to use it. Thanks!
BTW, on my latest flight the Kollsman window was working again. So it’s intermittent now, I guess. Maybe it just needed a vacation. I hadn’t flown in a few weeks :-)
I’m still going to replace it once I’m able to get a new alt, but I’ll hold onto this one just in case.
