Help Wanted: Bad Case of Hangar Rash

    Dear Icon Community,

I'm reaching out to all of you in a time of need. My Icon, which has been hangared in Vero Beach (KVRB) for the winter, in a large hangar with other aircraft, sustained damage to the tail tip due to a mishap while the FBO was moving planes around in the hangar.

I've been in touch with Icon in Tampa and, unfortunately, their trailer won't be available until at least May 13. Given the urgency of the situation, I'm desperately seeking assistance from anyone who might have a trailer available for loan so that I can transport my plane to Tampa as soon as possible.

I am more than willing to compensate for any help provided and would be immensely grateful for any assistance rendered.

If you or someone you know can lend a hand in this matter, please send me a private message.

Thank you all for your understanding and support.

    Safe flying,
    -yossi

That sucks. It would be my fear of trusting my plane in a large hangar. Many planes usually means many different people in there.

Will they be able to get on it, once you transport it to them? Not sure if the chapter 11 has screwed up the repair department.

The FBO rep called me and was very apologetic on the phone. I was horrified, of course: here I am, at home in New York City, thinking falsely that my plane is safe in Florida, tucked away in a hangar (I was paying for) and just waiting for me to come and fly it again. The rep said that accidents, while "very rare", do happen sometimes and they feel terrible about it; they will own up to their f***up, they are insured and will pay for the repairs and any associated costs. Of course, nothing can make up for the lost opportunity to enjoy my plane while it's broken but I hope to minimize that lost time.

So far, Icon has been responsive. Mandy got back to me and my interaction with her wasn't any different than pre-bankruptcy.

I'm worried about parts availability. The tail tip is beyond repair: the aluminum rod is sheared. I'm at home in New York City, but a friend of mine went to the FBO and took some photos. I worry about damage that cannot be easily seen, and I feel like Icon would be the best ones to ensure that, by the time they're done fixing the plane, it will be as safe as before this incident. I hope the bankruptcy will not affect their ability to help.

    Trailer? Anyone?

Good luck. Hope someone comes through with a lead on a trailer soon. Having said that, May 13 is not that far away. Maybe if you send Icon the pictures, they can work on getting the parts together in the meantime.

Pictures sent this morning. Order is in the works. But Icon maintenance will not be able to do a thorough inspection and determine what, if any, other parts need to be ordered until they have the plane...

Joseph, would it be easier for you to simply borrow someone’s tail tip instead?

I thought about that. I worry that there is hidden damage to the composite of the tail that is not visible. If the fuselage/empennage suffered some delamination it is weaker and it will be dangerous to fly the plane. I want to make sure the plane is safe to fly before I attempt to fly it.

    I was thinking same thing
I’d love to see pics, they must have really creamed it. At my daughter’s flight school, a CFI pushed a warrior into the Pipistel LSA and nicked the tail. That took it down for 2months waiting on part. :(

I have a new enclosed Icon trailer in a storage building in Brainerd MN. The problem is I am in Palm Springs for my sons wedding until May 6th. Is that too far for you to pick it up?

I have an enclosed trailer at Hidden River (22FA), Sarasota, Florida, ready to go, possibly as soon as this weekend.

Just saw the photos. I can see why you are concerned Yossi about damage inside the Vertical tail. The forces needed to shear the pipe at the lock-hole would be intense... Good luck to you during the diagnostics!

Thanks, Erich. Did you mean Andy from Icon? Icon's trailer is being used for the Formula One event in Miami. Will be tied up through May 13. But Rick Spinner came through and hopefully we can get my plane over to Icon by Saturday.

So glad you found one! In Florida, find one is a little easier than for me in Texas...

Wholly shit the tube broke way down in there, I’d be concerned about the tail too. My guess is it broke at the tail lock cut out. But damn there is a pin on the tail that should stabilize that the fact it broke off the horizontal tail is certainly damaged. The repair is likely gonna be crazy or a new tail.
