Extended warranty
Hello icon community. Starting my first day of icon training today with my new icon A5. I just got an email from the engine manufacture asking me if I wanted an extended warranty. Is this something that you all recommend that I do? Any suggestions or recommendations are welcome. Thanks I look forward to joining your community.

My plane is 6 years old SN0024 and virtually everything that can fail has been replaced on it EXCEPT the engine. That engine has been bulletproof. Thanks in part to the millions of hours on predator drones, Rotax have developped an amazing engine and put all those lessons-learned in the 912is. I would encourage you to speak with Jimmy Andrews for advice here. He is our Icon A5 “Yoda” and can advise you on whether this would have value. Maybe it can lower the cost of your rubber replacement.

Welcome aboard! I am new too, but I never got a letter. ??????
From all I have read on Rotax is, if you follow their guidelines on periodic maintenance, fuel and oil changes, it will run forever! Salute to the Austrian designers! -

Hi and welcome to the A5 owner community! My aircraft is SN 163 so relatively new also. Although I don't hold an A&P rating, I decided to take the Rotax maintenance course offered through Lockwood Aviation, so I could learn as much as possible about the engine, but that's just me (I was a maintenance test pilot in the USAF so have always been of that mindset). Some would consider taking that course to be overkill, but, as they say, knowledge is power. But having done so, I agree with Michael's post that the engine is extremely well engineered, reliable (there are a TON of them out there) and basically bulletproof as long as you, the owner, pay attention to it and don't take any short cuts. MY most important take-away from the Lockwood course instructor, Dean Vogel, was his repeated statement "Have I mentioned that this engine HATES not having sufficient oil?" So, always check/maintain your oil at the correct level (after burping the engine, per your A5 training) and use the correct oil. Coolant level/temperature are equally important - follow the protocols in your training. If you do that and don't attempt to operate when engine lights/warnings are displayed, you should be good. As for the value of an extended warranty, that would depend on the terms of agreement and without knowing what's in it, can't offer advice or even an opinion.

I am going to try and take the Light Sport Airframe Maintenance course in Atlanta this fall. That will allow me to help with my Annuals and SBs. It would be awesome if Vacaville offered the course ON THE ICON but I will settle for the generic course.

I'm not sure when they started offering that extended warranty option, but we definitely never got that invitation years ago.

I haven’t inquired. Wanted to see if anybody had purchased the warranty before I did so. I’ll send him an email and see if they reply.
