Vickers Flip-Proof Amphib Finishes Flight Testing

Article on Avweb regarding the Vickers Wave. This looks to me like an Icon copy. Claiming they just completed tests of gear down landings in water without flipping.

I spend my life around prototype aircraft. NO aircraft design survives the prototype phase with 0 changes. That statement does not ring true.

I agree. I hope it is true, but believe it’s more like wishful thinking. Sales hype.

Yes Paul has been working on this project for over 14 years now and is flying the first one for about a year. It’s a larger Icon that has a bigger engine and room for 4 but still not in production and made in New Zealand. You have to give him credit for staying with it this long and raising money all along as well as using most of his own No matter what happens with the aircraft he’s the most determined guy around.

I give anyone credit for being determined and sticking with it. My whole thing was about landing with the gear down. Which is one of the major accident fears people have. I hope whatever they figured out can benefit other models as well. I’m skeptical until I see it in action.

We used to land SeaMax with gear down and we video taped it to show it doesn’t flip but the icon is built sooo much better than the SeaMax that I’d take my chances with flipping any day!

Unlike float planes, there have been ICONs that have landed in water gear down and were fine. I’m sure speed and angle of descent had a lot to do with damage avoidance. I’ll just do multi “seven checks” to avoid being a test pilot.
