I am planning to be in Florida next week. My Icon is in Vero Beach (VRB). I would be up for a Bahamas trip!

That is definitely on my bucket list when I can get to Florida. I was looking at a Lauderdale- Nassau-Freeport-Lauderdale one day adventure, though I love to fly down Puerto Rico. Having never done it in General aviation plane, I want to take it in steps. Also I need to learn about how you do customs and do overnight and ensure you plane when you get back to airport.

Depends on where you’re going there. Maybe Nassau has hangars, but everywhere else that I’ve seen are tie downs. Either way, I’d say chances are slim off getting it in a hangar. I’ve flown to a few different islands in my Cirrus numerous times. It was always just tied down, as all the other planes were too. Having said that, I’ve never had any issues, nor have personality heard of any problems. A cockpit cover is a must.

There’s a Bahamas pilot guide that’s sold in many places. It lists all the airports with details. There’s also YouTube videos, such as …

You may also want to first start off by Flying the Florida Keys. A lot less paperwork and procedures. Also a blast. Doesn’t replace the Bahamas though.

Hey guys thanks for reaching out to my post. So I just did 4 days with my icon in Westend, Grand Bahamas. The resort there even let me park on the beach there. If you add me on IG @dannkane you will see my awesome pictures. It would be great to hop to multiple islands.

I have a relationship with the local ministry of tourism that we are trying to put together a fly in event at the private airport MYGW. Registration fees will support the local community and local nonprofit Westend Ecology Tours. I’m based out of North Perry.

If you’re really interested in joining feel free to call or text me at +1 (786) 734-3484 or email me at [email protected].

Also since I just did the trip and I tell u what I learned about the customs process. It’s not hard if u do it right…

    Hello Everyone,

I am from The Bahamas and am a Bahamas Flying Ambassador. Please be advised that legally, water landings need to be approved by Bahamas Civil Aviation. Long story there but that is what you are supposed to do. I know that there are pilots who have done it without approval and nothing has happened but you need to know. The person who was approving water landings was Bradley Strachan but he is no longer at Bahamas CAA. I am checking now to see who has taken on that role

This restriction goes way back to the Carlos Lehder and Pablo Escobar days when seaplanes were used to ferry "pharmaceutical" products to the USA. Sea planes were a convenient means of transportation. It is possible, but to be legal, you need permission.

Sadly, over my lifetime I saw a lot of really nice airplanes ditched along the south side of Nassau and in the Out Islands. A real waste. There are still a number visible if you look around in the islands. They would just write them off. When they finally got serious about going after drug trafficking, they would park seized airplanes along the taxiway to runway 14 in Nassau as a "statement". However, those airplanes became a convenient source of spare parts for local operators and the airplanes soon became an eyesore and were removed.
