My Icon "BURPS" coolant from the overflow bottle

    Hello,

Trying to see if this is a known issue. My Icon Purps coolant out of the vent tube at the top of the overflow reservoir. After 4-6 hours of running, half the coolant overflow bottle is gone. When I test the Bilge at startup, I sometimes see a red tinge liquid come out of the bilge outlet. Has anyone had that issue? Is that just the way it is with the Icon? My temperature never approaches hot (at least so far).

    Any input would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

I have never needed to add coolant, and it usually stays level at mid-bottle (wherever the upper zip ties are).

PROBLEM FOUND... The coolant leak is directly proportional to when/how often I use the heater... Leaks into the floor/bilge... Should be fixable. James found a pin hole in my heater core. Need a new core...

Hi Michel, I had the same problem with my Icon. James found a hose fitting leading to the heater that was loose. Since he tightened this I've used the heater (even though already hot as blazes here in TX) and haven't had any coolant loss.

Coolant service issue: I used cabin heater for maybe 20 min on my 4th flight (mostly to test it), added coolant before 5th flight to 1/4 level on overflow bottle. (First time coolant servicing by me as new owner) Now, about 3 hours later and it’s back to min line on overflow bottle. Seems I should look at cabin heater and check for evidence of a leak. Is this accessible? Any tips here? Thanks for post…

If your heater core or feed lines are leaking (mine were), your water coming out of the bilge outlet will be tinted pink. Let me know!

I have never once added coolant- 700 hours, and I check it before every flight. I have never taken the cowling off either. Now that said, at a couple annuals I asked them to top it off.

No pink tinge from bilge pump, but got some debris flushed out (good project)...added coolant to overflow bottle to 75% or so and will continue ops and see.

If no coolant is found either in the firewall well or the bilge, the next likely culprit is consumption which would be obvious in your exhaust (white smoke if a lot, sweet smell if a little). Consumption would be an indication of a bad head gasket or crack. Let us know what you find out. Jimmy, our favorite A&P says that one tank per 100 hrs is common.

Ok- thanks for data. To be sure I understand, one tank is referring to overflow bottle being full to black ty wrap or ?

He meant from the FULL line near the tie wrap to the MIN line in 100 hrs.
